Introduction

First Families 2001 is a project designed to provide a unique historical and cultural record of Australia. It is a database and collection of stories about the people of Australia, past and present.

It is accessible to all Australians through the Internet, and welcomes contributions from everyone. Your first family is the earliest person in your family known to have lived in Australia. You may choose to submit information on the earliest generation of each branch of your family.

Students from all Australian schools are invited to participate in this exciting program.

First Families 2001 is an initiative of the State Library of Victoria and the National Heritage Foundation. The Department of Education is promoting this project in the Victorian School System and Southern Metropolitan Region has provided this website to support the participation of schools in the Southern Region.

The School Project Book contains a wealth of ideas for learning activities, and other resources are provided with the kit. Teachers may wish include the following themes involving ancestry, genealogy, family trees, family origins, reasons for making Australia their home in their project.
